What is the London Hand Clinic?
The London Hand Clinic at the London Bridge Hospital has been established for a decade by a team of experts from London teaching hospitals including surgeon, neurologist, radiologist and hand therapist all in active NHS practice.
What is the benefit of this NHS based specialist clinic?
We regularly treat a broad spectrum of hand and shoulder problems in our specialist NHS clinics and are able to offer urgent assessment and treatment by a consultant surgeon specialised in both orthopaedic and plastic surgery.
Below are listed some of the more serious injuries we regularly treat:
Flexor tendon injuries
The most important finger tendons which should be operated on by a surgeon who regularly repairs these.
Nerve Injuries
These require microsurgery by specially trained surgeons; if treated incorrectly this injury can lead to chronic pain.
Finger fractures
Urgent surgery is needed if the fingers do not move normally shortly after or hand function may be at risk.
Scaphoid fractures
The most important of the bones in the wrist but difficult to heal. Require a long time in a cast or keyhole surgery.
Sprained wrist ligaments
Severe wrist pain can indicate a serious ligament injury and should be further investigated before it is too late.
Wrist and Colles fractures
For the elderly, a plaster cast may be sufficient. To ensure the best result, urgent surgery is recommended.
Urgent assessment and treatment
It is of paramount importance to restore the function of an injured hand to normal. Call one of the numbers below to arrange an assessment as soon as possible.
020 7357 8859 (24 hours, 7 days a week) or GP Liaison Officer on 020 7815 3686 (9:00am to 5:30pm, Monday to Friday)
Our hand surgeons also treat non-acute conditions, particularly including:
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
This condition can be treated as a day-case procedure under local anaesthetic or with keyhole surgery.
Ganglions
Are fluid-filled cysts which can be treated with excision under local anaesthetic as day-case procedures.
Dupuytren’s Contracture
Affects the tissue underneath the skin of the hand and fingers. Causes the fingers to curl in. Complex surgery and hand therapy is necessary to mobilise the fingers.
Trigger fingers, Repetitive Strain Injury, Tendinitis, Tennis and Golfer’s Elbow
All conditions that may have been caused by overuse. If treated early and correctly a good prognosis can be expected. If mistreated, permanent disability can result.
Cosmetic Hand Surgery
Removal of scars and wrinkles under local anaesthetic
Wrist and Elbow pain
Caused by many different conditions. Keyhole surgery is now available and shows very promising results
Shoulder Pain
Complex cause. Physiotherapy or keyhole surgery will, in the majority of cases, be able to correct the problem.
